Introduction
USCIS announced that beginning on April 1, 2024, it will offer N-400 applicants the convenience of requesting a new or replacement Social Security Number (SSN) or card and as well as update their immigration status with the Social Security Administration (SSA) online.
Summary
Noncitizens applying for naturalization using the latest edition of the Form N-400 (edition date 04/01/2024) can request an SSN or a replacement card with their application. Once approved, new citizens may avoid visiting an SSA office for these services and to submit evidence of their U.S. Citizenship. In some cases, the SSA may ask for more details. However, applicants who use the 09/17/2019 edition of Form N-400 will not have this option as the SSA questions are only available in the new form edition.
The new edition of Form N-400 will be available for online filing starting April 1, 2024. To file the application online, applicants must use their myUSCIS account or create a myUSCIS online account (at no cost), which offers a convenient and secure platform for form submission, fee payments, and for tracking their pending USCIS immigration requests such as responses to a Request for Evidence notice.
