The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will begin to enforce the REAL ID ACT starting on May 7, 2025.
The REAL ID Act requires U.S. states and territories to issue driver’s license and non-driver identification cards that meet strict security requirements.
What is a REAL ID compliant license and ID?
Real ID compliant license and IDs are marked with a star on the upper portion of the card. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs) and Enhanced Identification Documents (EIDs) are also compliant, and they are marked with an image of a U.S. flag and the word “Enhanced” at the top of the card.
Acceptable documentation starting May 7, 2025:
OR
Acceptable alternative forms of identification:
The above list of acceptable documents is a partial list as some other forms of IDs might prove acceptable alternatives for domestic travel. As always, given the evolving nature of this issue travelers should refer to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website (www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification) before traveling.
How to get a REAL ID
To get a REAL ID, you must apply in person at your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency. Although the exact requirements may vary slightly by state, you will typically need to bring several specific documents. These include proof of identity such as a U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Permanent Resident Card; proof of your Social Security number like a Social Security card, W-2 form, or recent pay stub; and two documents that show your current state residency, such as utility bills, lease agreements, or bank statements.
Additionally, you must provide proof of lawful status in the United States. The REAL ID is a federally mandated form of identification that will be required for certain purposes, such as boarding domestic flights or entering secure federal facilities, starting May 7, 2025. To ensure you have everything you need, visit the Department of Homeland Security’s REAL ID website, which provides a checklist tailored to each state’s requirements. https://www.dhs.gov/real-id
