Juvenile Delinquency
Unlike the adult criminal justice system, the juvenile court is concerned with the
rehabilitation of the minor, and not retribution. Under the California Welfare and
Institutions Code, the court is directed to provide the minor “guidance that is
consistent with their best interest, that holds them accountable for their behavior,
and that is appropriate for their circumstances.”
The consequences in juvenile court, however, can be very serious, including wardship
and confinement to the Division of Juvenile Justice (formerly known as the California
Youth Authority). However, juveniles accused of committing certain crimes can also
be granted informal probation or Deferred Entry of Judgment in which case the petition
can eventually be dismissed.
