Domestic violence and child abuse

Most domestic violence charges can be filed as either a misdemeanor or a felony. In addition, domestic violence charges carry certain sentencing requirements, including spousal battery/anger management classes, mandatory fines and protective orders. Domestic violence cases are serious, and can also have non-criminal consequences such as restrictions or loss of child visitation or custody.

Often times, a domestic violence case will also include child abuse charges. Child abuse and endangerment cases can arise out of domestic violence situations in which a child’s welfare is placed in danger. Sometimes a parent who is under the influence of a controlled substance is also charged with child abuse or neglect. Other child abuse charges can stem from parental discipline of a child. Like domestic violence cases, child abuse charges can also be filed as a misdemeanor or a felony.
